White Lies have done to my iPod, Car radio, and back porch time what The Editors did a few years ago. And by that I mean, totally consumed me. I love their new album To Lose My Life. You can definitely hear the Joy Division-80s-post-everything-self aware-indie (I'm starting to hate that word) sound that has been done well and uniquely by bands like the Editors and Interpol, but this one stands out. Maybe it's Harry McVeigh's dynamic vocal range, or the oft heard minimalist synth/vocals that slowly build to the full band's loud and directed sound. It's dark but not obnoxious. I hate when bands try their best to fit into a genre by some ambiguous rulebook, letting creativity take the back seat. (STOP COPYING RADIOHEAD!) I remember when the Lord of the Rings film came out, a cable channels ran a mini-series with a LOFTR-ish story. I love fantasy stories, but be original! Don't send one underdog with a powerful possession to an evil land to destroy it. Anyways, White Lies, do not do this. I have turned several of my friends onto them and hopefully you too.

Octane Coffee Bar was on CNN.com recently. I was actually there the night of this filming but sadly, didn't make it to the final editing process. ha. Anywho, watch this video about Thursday Night Throwdown. I am proud of all my friends who compete/run the monthly event.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

I have been listening to the new Appleseed Cast and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart all morning. It's upbeat and 90s indie rock-esque. They cite the Ramones, Teenage Fanclub, and My Bloody Valentine "Paint a Rainbow" as some of their influences. All of which I can hear in it. Oh not to mention their name is pretty cool.

PS: They are playing at the Earl in March. I'll be there.

One of my favorite metal bands of all time, Eluveitie, is releasing their new "acoustic" album, Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion in April as well. Nuclear Blast is sending this one out. Some of the instruments on it are: a long-necked lute, hammered dulcimer, five-stringed viola, Hurdy-gurdy, tin whistles, acoustic guitars and the such. (Q:who plays that stuff!? A:people who ride centaurs over valleys daily) Most of the album will be sung in the ancient Gaulish tongue. From what I understand, no double bass and swinging dreadlocks on this one. Just a tribute to the ancient folk music of their Celtic culture. I cannot wait.

Atlanta Scion Rock Fest

UPDATE:: Scion Rock Fest's site (link below) will now allow you to register for tickets. I am going to post the rules.

Please submit your information in order to receive a confirmation e-mail of the location necessary to pick up tickets. If you live more than 60 miles from the closest ticket location you may select the Will Call option to pick up your tickets at the Masquerade starting at noon on the day of the event. Only addresses outside of 60 miles from a retailer location will be allowed Will Call pick-up. Note that all addresses will be verified for proximity.

I don't fully understand why Scion (the car company) would host a free* (legitimate)metal fest in Atlanta. Why question though? From what I hear, it will use the Masquerade's Music Park stage as well as Heaven, and Hell. Whammy. No re-entry though. That's really the only will put a damper on my 12 hour orgy of riffage. The bands I am particularly excited about are bold:

I have heard Criminal Records has some, but have not confirmed for myself. So with the knowledge I have, I will pray for no rain, pray I have some money to spend (food, overpriced black band t shirt, etc), and pray I don't have a BM during the time a porta-potty shared with a thousand gross metalheads is all that is available.

Lycanthrope and Judgement

I am normally not a Weekend night movie goer. I prefer a weeknight and/or a matinee. There is something about Friday and Saturday nights that keeps me from staring at Hollywood actors for two hours. Maybe I haven't been out of college long enough, maybe it's just part of being single in a big city. Regardless, I made an exception to this habit and saw a 7:30 showing of Undwerworld: Rise of the Lycans last Friday with a few friends who share a love for the first two films. I am glad I did. If you enjoy vampire films, this is the one to see. The story is slightly detailed, so it would be much more enjoyable with their knowledge. But don't let that be a put off. Unlike the the first two films, this one takes place 800 years ago. It is a prequel. So there are no Doom-esque machine guns, fancy European sports cars, or internet data bases that make beeping noises every time a window pops up. Nope. This one is swords, spears and horses. Think: the Braveheart cast ransacked by Lycans (werewolves) and vampires. Recommended.

This morning I woke up and decided to listen to VNV Nation on the way to work. 3 hours later, I am still here. For fans of electronic music, I think they are the perfect mix of goth, aggression, and melody. Electronic Body Music.
